Victory awaits Real Madrid or Liverpool in the 2018 Uefa Champions league come the 26th of this month, exactly one week away. Two distinct and different teams, two of European club football’s most famous names meet at the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kiev the capital of Ukraine to compete for victory. Kiev happens to be the birth place of greats Oleh Blokhin and Valeriy Lobanovskiy, and a safe and cheap place with a population of 2.8 million.

Real Madrid, defending Champions and three time finalist in the last four years will be looking to lift the trophy for the 13th time in their unprecedented history. Liverpool, last in the final 10 years ago and three times in the competition over that same period will be hoping for their sixth victory.

Victory vs Style of Play.

Real Madrid a Spanish team like to transition quickly from defense to attack when in possession of the ball. When they lose possession or are not in control of the ball they keep a low defensive line and press lowly. Liverpool on the other hand a team from England likes to pass the ball around, transition quickly from quickly defense to attack and move with speed. When they are not in control of the ball or lose possession they press highly up the pitch. (gegenpressing). Liverpool again keep a very high defensive line.

This style of play between the two sides is similar but very different as well. The discussion about style of play raises an old age question. Does style of play have an effect on the outcome of a match? If it does will it affect the 2018 Uefa champion’s league in Kiev? Whose favor will it swing it to, Real Madrid or Liverpool? Will it result in victory for Real Madrid or Liverpool? I welcome your views and comments on this.

Victory vs Previous Meetings.

Real Madrid and Liverpool have met in the Competition five times with the first meeting dating as far back as 1981. Liverpool have won 3 of those meetings with 2 victories to Real Madrid. The 1981 European cup which happened to be their first meeting was played in Paris, a match Liverpool won one nil. They again met in the round 16 of the 2008/09 Uefa Champions league with Liverpool winning both legs with an aggregate score of 5 nil. Liverpool won the first leg played in Spain by a one nil margin and the second leg at Anfield by a four nil margin.

Their last meetings came in the 2014/15 Uefa Champions’ league group stage. Real Madrid won the first leg play at Anfield by three goals to nil and the second leg in Spain one nil. This shows that Liverpool slightly have the edge over Real Madrid when it comes to results or meetings. Will this be yardstick enough to predict who taste victory in Kiev? Victory vs Current Situations.

Real Madrid have dominated the Uefa Champions league but find domestic success scanty. They have won the domestic title just twice over the last decade with their rivals Barcelona dominating affairs. This season which concludes tomorrow isn’t any different. Real Madrid will most likely finish third and were eliminated from the Copa Del Rey very early.

Liverpool on the other hand have not won the Premier league since it changed format with their last victory coming some twenty eight years ago. Manchester United their archrivals have dominated the league and overtaken them on the standing over that period. This season of theirs have been similar to Real Madrid. They have finished fourth and were exited from both the Carabao cup and FA cup very early.

The current situation between the two sides but them on similar footing going to Kiev. The only source of silverware for them this season is the finals Kiev will be hosting in a week’s time. So who do you expect to nick victory in Kiev?

Victory vs Final Pedigree.

Real Madrid have won the Competition a record twelve times and have triumphed in their last six finals. Overall their finals record stand at twelve wins and three loses. The last finals they won was last season’s final in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. It made them the first team to win the current competition twice in a row.

Liverpool on the other hand have won the Uefa Champions league five times. Their last victory came in the Istanbul finals in 2005. They have been to the finals of the competition seven times in all triumphing in five of them as said earlier.

This shows that Liverpool have a slight edge over Real Madrid when it comes to finals having lost twice compared to Real Madrid’s thrice. But Real Madrid’s three wins in the last four years cannot be underestimated. Using the statistics above as a guide who do you see claiming victory in Kiev?

Victory vs Wonder Evening.

No matter who wins or what the statistics are saying one thing that all football fans hope for is an exciting and entertaining final in Kiev. May the victory go to the best team. As always your comments and views are welcomed.

  1. Nicely written. My bet is on Mo Salah coming on top as MoTM. Liverpool should win, time for them to rule Europe again.
