RUSSIA 2018: MATCH DAY TWELVE.

Today is exactly twelve days since the world cup kicked off in Russia. In day twelve of the tournament we analyze the fixtures on display. But before we do that let us review match day eleven’s results real quick. The day began in a stunning fashion when England hammered Panama 6 goals to 1. A more thrilling and closely contested affair followed next. That match ended 2-2 to Japan and Senegal. The day ended as it started when Colombia thumped Poland to record their 1st win and keep themselves in the tournament.

There are 4 matches on display courtesy of the last round of matches in the group stages. The 1st of the day is a double fixture that will be played at the same time. They are Saudi Arabia against Egypt and Uruguay against Russia. The second and last double fixture of the day sees Iran face Portugal and Spain come up against Morocco. The matches will be fascinating and highly competitive because of the fact that the various teams do not know what is going on in the opponents’ camp.

DAY TWELVE: SAUDI ARABIA VS EGYPT.

Day twelve will begin with the fixture between Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The match will be played at the Volgograd arena at 3pm UK time. Both teams will be hoping for a win to cap off an otherwise disappointing campaign. Today’s match is the 1st meeting between the two sides since the 1999 Confederations cup.

Saudi Arabia have lost all their last 5 matches going into this match. Egypt on the other hand have recorded 2 draws and 3 defeats in that same run, the latest result being the 3-1 loss to Russia. This will be the 1st time Egypt is facing a side from Asia in the world cup. Egypt also haven’t won any of their world cup matches. Either teams will be the 1st in this year’s tournament to acquire 0 point should they lose.

This match is a meaningless one but one that would allow either teams to end the tournament on a bright note. As such it will be an evenly contested one but I foresee Egypt winning their 1st ever world cup match.

DAY TWELVE: URUGUAY VS RUSSIA.

As Saudi Arabia and Egypt are dueling so will Uruguay and Russia, except they will be battling for top of group A. The match will kick off at the same time as the Saudi Arabia-Egypt match at the Samara arena. The winner of this match will top the group and avoid the 1st placed team in group B. Uruguay and Russia have met twice at the world cup with both teams winning one each.

Uruguay have won all their last 5 matches going into this match. Russia on the other hand have won 2, drawn 1 and lost 2 of their past 5 matches, with their latest result the 3-1 win over Egypt. Russia have lost each of their past 4 world cup matches against South American sides while Uruguay have won their last 2 world cup matches against European sides.

The record and statistics bode well for Uruguay. The match will be a tough one considering Uruguay haven’t sparked to life and Russia are having a very good tournament. Nevertheless I see Uruguay winning this one because of their ability to grind out results.

DAY TWELVE: IRAN VS PORTUGAL.

The 2nd match of day twelve sees Iran come face-face with Portugal. The match will be played at the Mordovia arena at 7pm UK time. Both sides will be hoping for a win as that will see them qualify to the next round of the competition. Tonight’s match will be the second meeting between the two sides at the world cup. Portugal won the 1st one thanks to Deco and Ronaldo’s goal.

Iran have won 2 and lost 1 of their last 5 matches with 2 of them cancelled. Portugal on the other hand have recorded 2 wins and 3 draws from that same run, the last result a 1 nil win over Morocco. Iran are winless in 7 world cup matches against European oppositions. Portugal have won 3 of their 4 world cup matches against Asian sides.

Portugal have the statistics stacked firmly in their favor and a cohesive unit to boot. Iran will give them a match to remember but when 90 minutes of football is over I expect Portugal to go through with a win.

DAY TWELVE: SPAIN VS MOROCCO.

The Spain-Morocco match will take place at the same time as the Iran-Portugal match. The match will be played at the Kaliningrad Stadium. A win or draw for Spain will see them through to the next round whiles defeat will exit them from the competition should Iran win. This match will be the 3rd time the two nations face each other, with Spain winning the past 2.

Spain have produced 3 wins and 2 draws from their last 5 matches, the latest result being the 1 nil win over Iran. Morocco on the other hand have recorded 2 wins, a draw and 2 loses in that same run, and losing their last match 1 nil to Portugal. Spain have won 3 of their 4 world cup matches against African oppositions whiles Morocco have lost 4 of their last 6 world cup matches against European sides.

I see Spain winning this one because of the quality of their sides coupled with the fact that Morocco do not have much riding on this match. The statistics are on Spain’s side as well. But this should make for an exciting match for the neutrals.
