MATCH DAY TWO OF WORLD CUP 2018: WHO WINS?

The 2018 world cup in Russia has finally begun. The curtain raiser to the tournament was done beautifully by host Russia when they beat Saudi Arabia by 5 goals to nil. Today the world cup continues, first with Egypt against Uruguay then Morocco against Iran and finally Portugal against Spain.

This matches are going to be played one after the other. From the outside they looked like a well paired match or even affairs. For us to confirm that and be able to guess who wins let’s take a look at the matches carefully and one after the other. We will start with the 1st one Egypt against Uruguay.

EGYPT VS URUGUAY AT WORLD CUP 2018: WHO WINS?

Egypt and Uruguay lock horns today at 1pm UK time in Yekaterinburg Ekaterinburg Stadium. The clash sees Luis Suarez’s Uruguay come up against Mohammed Salah’s Egypt. Most of the pre-match rumor centered on whether Mo Salah will be involved after his injury 19 days ago. His involvement has now been confirmed and have given each other a boost. The two teams have faced each other ones in an international friendly with Uruguay coming out victorious.

Uruguay and Egypt boast a similar record. They mostly lose their opening world cup matches. Uruguay have lost 6 of their last world cup opening matches compared to Egypt’s 2. This world cup will be Uruguay’s 13th appearance while this is just the 3rd time for the Pharaohs of Egypt. Uruguay’s last 5 matches has produced 3 wins a draw and a loss whiles Egypt’s has resulted in a winless round.

The Uruguay national team boast of high caliber players like Suarez, Cavani, Godin and others. Egypt can only boast of Salah and their record making goalkeeper. With this statistics in mind I see Egypt succumbing to Uruguay. But that is just my view and I am no Octopus Paul of South Africa so I expect you to share your views as well.

MOROCCO VS IRAN AT WORLD CUP 2018: WHO WINS?

Morocco and Iran had contrasting qualifiers or journey to the world cup. Whiles Iran went unbeaten, Morocco were only able to post 4 wins in 8 matches to qualify. They however play against each other at the Krestovsky Stadium in St Petersburg at 4pm UK time. Iran and Morocco are both in a difficult group so this is a must win match for them.

Both teams have never played against each other in the world cup. Their only meeting a friendly ended in a 0-0 stalemate. Russia 2018 is Morocco’s 5th appearance at the world cup and their 1st since 1986. Iran are also participating in their 5th world cup and make 2 consecutive appearance for the 1st time. Iran’s last 5 matches has resulted in 2 wins and 1 draw with 2 cancelled whiles Morocco’s has resulted in 4 wins and a draw.

Medhi Benatia Adel Taarabt, Nordin Amrabat and Younes Belhanda are some of the high profile names in the Moroccan national team. The Iran players are relatively unknown outside Asia. This statistics tell me about a Moroccan win in the pipe line. Share in the comment section who you think will win and whether you agree or disagree with me.

PORTUGAL VS SPAIN WORLD CUP 2018: WHO WILL WIN?

After the two matches in the day, Portugal will tackle Spain in the evening. The anticipated affair will take place at Fisht Olympic Stadium at 7pm UK time. The pre-match discussion was centered on the sacking of Spain’s coach Julen Lopetegui but tonight it will be about just Portugal and Spain. The whole world will focus on who the duel between these two teams. Portugal and Spain face of once more in the popular rivalry or war called the Iberian derby.

Tonight’s meeting will be the 37th time they face each other. Spain has won 18 of the matches drawing 12 with Portugal winning just 6. This shows the dominance of Spain. Portugal and Spain upon their numerous matches have only played against each other at the world cup once. That was the round 16th of the 2010 world cup, a match Spain won by 1 nil. Spain’s last 5 matches has produced 2 wins and 3 draws while Portugal’s has resulted in 2 wins, 2 draws and a loss.

Spain and Portugal both boast quality players in their ranks. For Spain you can talk about Sergio Ramos, Andres Iniesta, David De Gea and so much more. With respect to Portugal Cristiano Ronaldo, Jao Moutinho, Jao Maria and others come to mind. I expect this match to be a cagey one so a draw for both team will be a good result. I say so because of both teams’ recent form and Spain’s situation.
