MATCH DAY NINE OF THE 2018 WORLD CUP.

The 2018 world cup in Russia continues with match day nine. Before we discuss match day nine’s fixtures, let us review match day eight’s fixtures. The 1st fixture of match day eight ended 1-1 to both Denmark and Australia after yet another VAR penalty was awarded. France won one nil over Peru in the second fixture of match day eight. The match day ended with the meeting between Argentina and Croatia, a match Croatia won by a 3 nil thumping.

The 2018 world cup continues with match day nine’s fixtures. The 1st match will be played between Brazil and Costa Rica. Nigeria and Iceland will play the 2nd match of the match day. The last match of the day will be contested between Serbia and Switzerland. The matches look like a good pair so hopefully we have another good day at the world cup.

MATCH DAY NINE: BRAZIL VS COSTA RICA.

Match day nine will begin with the meeting between Brazil and Costa Rica. The South American heavy weights will come up against the Concacaf nation. The match will be played at the Krestovsky Stadium at 1pm UK time. Both teams dropped points in their 1st match so a win is required here to boost their chances of qualification. Brazil have met Costa Rica 10 times in the past winning 9 and losing 1.

Brazil have won 4 and drawn 1 of their previous 5 matches, the latest result being the 1-1 draw with Switzerland. Costa Rica on the other hand have won 1 and lost 4 of their past 5 matches, the latest result being the 1 nil loss to Serbia. Brazil will be without Danilo for this fixture. Costa Rica’s only previous world cup win against a South American side was 4 years ago against Uruguay.

This match will be a cagey encounter since most of the matches at the tournament have turned out that way. I foresee a Brazil victory come the end of 90 minutes. They have a quality side and should have reassessed themselves by now going into this match. Anything other than a Brazil win will render them unconvincing.

MATCH DAY NINE: NIGERIA VS ICELAND.

The 2nd fixture of match day nine will see Nigeria and Iceland face-off. The African nation will duel with the European nation at the Volgograd arena at 4pm UK time. Victory for both teams will put them in good standing for qualification to the next round of the tournament. Nigeria and Iceland have only met once in the past, a match Iceland won 3 nil. They have not met in the world cup before.

Nigeria have lost 4 and drawn 1 of their past 5 matches, the latest result being the 2 nil defeat to Croatia. Iceland have also recorded 3 loses and 2 draws in that same run, their last result being the impressive 1-1 draw with Argentina. Iceland may be without Gudmundsson whiles Nigeria could be strengthened with the return of Onazi. All of Nigeria’s win at the world cup have come against European oppositions.

This should make for an interesting match considering a win keeps the victor firmly in the competition. A hard fought win for Nigeria is in the pipeline but a draw is also highly possible. It should make for an exciting match for the neutrals.

MATCH DAY NINE: SERBIA VS SWITZERLAND.

Match day nine will end with the fixture between Serbia and Switzerland. The match between them will be played at the Kaliningrad Stadium at 7pm UK time. This fixture will be the 1st time both teams meet after Serbia attained independence. A win for Serbia will secure their passage to the round 16th stage. A Switzerland victory too will put them in a pole position to qualify.

Serbia have won 3 and lost 2 of their previous 5 matches, the latest being the 1 nil win over Costa Rica. Switzerland on the other hand have recorded 3 wins and 2 draw in their past 5 matches, the latest being the 1-1 draw with Brazil. Switzerland have lost just one of their last 4 world cup matches against European opposition.

This statistics however will not tell the same story. I see the Serbian team troubling Switzerland and nicking a goal past them. A goal may be sufficient for Serbia to pull another victory or a draw. I don’t see Switzerland winning this one despite their form.
