Today is match day eighteen of the ongoing global football fiesta in Russia. Seventeen good days have passed and we are in the eighteenth day. There are still a lot of days to go before the end of the tournament but for now it’s the eighteenth day and with that we focus on that. Before we discuss today’s matches let us as always review yesterday’s matches.

Yesterday saw us witnessed one of the most free- flowing match of the tournament. It saw France and Argentina play an entertaining 7 goal match. France won 4-3 to progress to the next stage of the competition. That same match day saw Uruguay and Portugal play an intense match that ended 2-1 to Uruguay courtesy of brilliant Cavani’s double. Both matches were interesting and competitive in their own rights.

Match day eighteen offer two highly competitive and interesting matches. First is the match between Spain and Russia and second is the meeting between Croatia and Denmark. Both matches will be played at the same time as yesterday’s two matches. While not high profile names like we saw yesterday, the matches will be though so don’t miss them too. It is a complete European affair in both matches.

The match between Spain and Russia is the 1st of two matches to be played on match day eighteen. The match sees 2010 world champions go head to head with tournament host Russia for a place in the quarter finals. Spain will be playing Russia because they topped their Group whiles Russia will be playing Spain because they were 2nd in their Group.

This match day eighteen fixture is not a new phenomenon for football because they have played each other over and over again. Spain have not tasted defeat against Russia since Russia broke up with the Soviet Union. They have won 4 and drawn 2 of the 6 matches played. The match will determine who makes it to the quarter final stage and will be played at the Luzhniki Stadium at 3pm UK time.

Spain have produced 2 wins and 3 draws from their last 5 matches, the 2-2 draw with Morocco their latest result. Russia on the other hand have recorded 2 wins, a draw and 2 defeat in their past 5 matches. Their latest result is the 3 nil drubbing by Uruguay, a defeat they will want to forget going into this match.

Spain are unbeaten in their last 23 matches, last tasting defeat against Italy at the round 16 of the 2016 European championship. Spain have scored 10 goals in their last 3 matches against Russia. Russia are featuring in the knockout stage of a major tournament for the 2nd time since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The statistics are in Spain’s favor and they boast a better team so this match although a cagey one should be comfortably won by Spain.

The match between Croatia and Denmark is the 2nd match of match day eighteen. This match will see Croatia duel with Denmark to secure qualification to the quarter finals of the tournament. The match is an all European affair. Croatia are playing Denmark because they placed 1st in their Group whiles Denmark are playing Croatia because they were 2nd in their Group.

This match will take place at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium at 7pm UK time. Croatia-Denmark fixture is not the 1st yet. The past 5 matches between Croatia and Denmark have produced 2 wins apiece and a draw. The two sides last met in a friendly match in 2004, a match Croatia won by 2 goals to 1.

Croatia have won all their matches at the world cup and have recorded just 1 loss in their last 5 matches. Their latest result is the 2-1 victory over Iceland. Denmark are also unbeaten in the Russia winning once and drawing twice. They have produced 2 wins and 3 draws in their past 5 matches. This is their 1st meeting at the world cup.

Croatia have won 5 of their 6 world cup matches against European sides with their single defeat against France in 1998. Denmark are unbeaten in their last 18 matches, a national record going into this match. Denmark have kept 6 clean sheets in their past 7 matches in all competitions. This match is a well-balanced one with both teams in good shape and standing. It will be a tight match but I expect the quality of Croatia to triumph in the end.
