DAY TWENTY: ROUND 16TH STAGE.

Today is day twenty of the world cup in Russia and the day for the final matches in the round 16th stage of the tournament. The quarter final stage of the tournament is in sight. But before the quarter finals is the last two matches of the round 16th stage. We will review yesterday’s matches and jump straight to the discussion and analysis of today’s matches.

The world cup sent 2 teams packing home as two intense and energy demanding matches were played. The 1st of those matches was the match between Brazil and Mexico. Brazil won 2 nil but was only able to penetrate the Mexican defence after the 1st half. The 2nd match between Belgium and Japan was perhaps the best match of the tournament so far. It saw Belgium come from 2 goals down to win 3-2 in a convincing and entertaining manner.

Day twenty of the world cup offers two more matches today, the final matches of the round of 16. The 1st of them is the match between Sweden and Switzerland. The Colombia-England fixture is the 2nd of the two matches. They will both follow the time of the other round of 16 matches. The matches will see the final shape of the quarter finals pop up.

DAY TWENTY: SWEDEN VS SWITZERLAND.

Day twenty of the world cup begins with the match between Sweden and Switzerland. The match is an all European affair which will see Sweden and Switzerland battle for a place in the quarter final of the world cup. Sweden topped their Group so as a reward for their performance, they get to play Switzerland. Switzerland also plays Sweden because they placed 2nd in their Group.

The fixture between the two sides will be played at the Krestovsky Stadium at 3pm UK time. Sweden and Switzerland have played each other a number of times in the past. This will be the 29th meeting between them. But of the 29 meetings they are yet to face off in a major tournament and this meeting will be the 1st.

Sweden have produced 2 wins, 2 draws and a loss in their last 5 matches going into this match. Their latest result is the 3 nil win over Mexico, one that gives them a lot of confidence. Switzerland have also recorded 2 wins and 3 draws in that same run, the 2-2 draw with Costa Rica their latest result.

Sweden are unbeaten in their last three matches against Switzerland, with their last defeat in 1994. Switzerland have been defeated just once in their past 25 matches, a defeat dating almost a year. Both sides are in good form going into this match and the statistics do not greatly favor one side. This match represent their best chance to reach the quarter finals of the tournament and they would want to grab it with both hands. It will be a cagey and competitive affair but I expect Switzerland to scrap through.

DAY TWENTY: COLOMBIA VS ENGLAND.

The match between Colombia and England will be the last match of day twenty and the round 16th of the tournament in Russia. The match will see the South American side go head to head with the European giant for the last place in the quarter finals of the tournament. Colombia were Group winners and were rewarded with a match against England. England also face Colombia because they placed 2nd in their Group.

The match will be played at the Otkrytie arena at 7pm UK time. Colombia and England are not new to this fixture. They have faced-off 5 times in the past. Of those 5 meetings England remains undefeated winning 3 and drawing two. England and Colombia have met in the world cup once, a group stage match in the 1998 world cup. England won that match 2 nil.

Colombia have recorded 2 wins, 2 draws and a defeat in their last five matches before proceeding to this match. Their latest result is a 1 nil win over Senegal. England have also produced 4 wins and a loss from that same run, the 1 nil loss to Belgium their latest result. They go into this match hoping to rectify that flaw in their otherwise perfect record.

Colombia are hoping to reach the quarter finals for just the 2nd time in their history and a 2nd consecutive time as well. England have tasted victory in just 2 of their last 8 knockout matches at the world cup. Both sides don’t have enough experience playing in the knockout stages. Nevertheless I expect England to win this match because of their impressive record against Colombia and their current crop of players.
