DAY FOURTEEN OF THE 2018 WORLD CUP

Day fourteen of the ongoing global football fiesta in Russia is here. Before we analyze the matches it presents, let’s look at the results of the previous match day. The day started in an interesting manner when Peru defeated Australia by 2 goals to nil and Denmark held France to a goalless draw. Perhaps the more interesting part of the day was the evening fixtures. It saw Argentina and Croatia score late goals to defeat Nigeria and Iceland 2-1 respectively.

Four matches are on show today. The 1st two of the four matches see South Korea play Germany and Mexico host Sweden. The other two matches see Serbia play Brazil and Switzerland play Costa Rica. This final round of matches in Group E and F will determine the teams which will qualify to the next stage of the competition. It should make for a highly entertaining set of matches.

DAY FOURTEEN: SOUTH KOREA VS GERMANY.

South Korea and Germany face-off at the Kazan arena. The match between South Korea and Germany is the 1st of two matches to be played at 3pm UK time. South Korea and Germany have faced of three times in the past. Two of those meetings were in the world cup and Germany won both. South Korea won the third match between them, a friendly. A win for both sides will go a long way to determining who qualifies for the next round.

South Korea have produced 4 loses and a draw in their past 5 matches, the latest result being the 2-1 defeat to Mexico. Germany on the other hand have recorded 2 wins and 3 loses in their last 5 matches. Germany have won all their 5 matches against Asian sides at the world cup. South Korea have lost their last 4 world cup matches in a row. I see Germany winning this match because the statistics are hugely in their favor coupled with the quality of their sides.

DAY FOURTEEN: MEXICO VS SWEDEN.

Mexico and Sweden face-off at the Central Stadium at Yekaterinburg. The match is the 2nd of two matches to be played at 3pm UK time. The two sides have faced-off 9 times in the past. Mexico has lost just one of their last 5 matches against Sweden. Mexico and Concacaf nations have never won three consecutive matches at the world cup. They have the chance to achieve that today. A win for Sweden might see them qualify.

Mexico have recorded 3 wins, a draw and a defeat in their past 5 matches, the 2-1 win over South Korea their latest result. Sweden have also produced a win, 2 draws and 2 loses in that same run. Both teams have been impressive in this year’s tournament but Mexico just edge Sweden a bit. That is why I foresee Mexico winning this one instead of Sweden, but Sweden will give all they can to win it.

DAY FOURTEEN: SERBIA VS BRAZIL.

Serbia will play Brazil in the double match at 7pm UK time. The match will be played at the Otkrytie arena. Serbia and Brazil are meeting for the 2nd time since Serbia became an independent nation. Brazil won their 1st meeting, a 1 nil win in a friendly. A win or draw will see Brazil qualify for the next round but only a win will do for Serbia.

Serbia have generated 3 wins and 2 loses in their last 5 matches, the 2-1 defeat to Switzerland their latest result. Brazil have recorded 4 wins and a draw going into this match. Brazil have won just one of their past 7 matches against European opposition but are unbeaten in their last 13 matches. The statistics seem to favor and not favor Brazil at the same time. When the two sides kick-off, the statistics wouldn’t matter because they will both fight for a result. Nevertheless I see Brazil winning this encounter to top Group F.

DAY FOURTEEN: SWITZERLAND VS COSTA RICA.

The Switzerland-Costa Rica match is the 2nd of the two matches to be played at 7pm UK time. The match will take place at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. This match will be the 3rd meeting between the two sides and the 1st in a major tournament. Both nations have recorded a win each in the previous two matches. Costa Rica have already exited the competition whiles a win or draw will be enough for Switzerland to qualify should Brazil win or draw in the other match.

Switzerland have produced 3 wins and 2 draws in their past 5 matches, the 2-1 win over Serbia the latest result. Costa Rica on the other hand have won one and lost 4 of their last 5 matches, losing the last match 2 nil to Brazil. Switzerland are unbeaten in their last 4 world cup matches against Concacaf oppositions whiles Costa Rica are winless in their last 4 world cup matches against European sides. The statistics are firmly in Switzerland’s favor and the quality of their side warrant a win.
