DAY EIGHT MATCHES: RUSSIA 2018

Russia 2018 entered day eight today. As such the tournament continues with a couple of matches. But before we look at those matches, let us review yesterday’s matches. Yesterday’s matches although followed my predictions, they didn’t lived up to their billing. All winning teams won by playing a scrappy football. The score lines itself was scrappy.

Portugal played the 1st match of the day and won by a 1 nil score line. They saw less of the ball throughout the 90 minutes. Uruguay against Saudi Arabia also ended 1 nil in favor of Uruguay. The last match of the day saw Spain come up against Iran. A hat trick of 1 nil win was achieved courtesy of Diego Costa’s solitary goal.

Today is a new day with new matches. Hopefully we see a lot of goals. The 1st match of the day sees Denmark face Australia. The 2nd match will see France play Peru. Argentina-Croatia fixture is the last match of the day. All matches are interesting in their own rights so hopefully they turn out much better than yesterday’s.

DAY EIGHT MATCHES: DENMARK VS AUSTRALIA.

Day eight of the 2018 world cup begins with an afternoon kick-off between Denmark and Peru. The match will take place at the Samara arena at 1pm UK time. Victory for Denmark will confirm their qualification to the next round whiles defeat for Australia will see them exit the competition. Today’s match will be the 4th time Denmark and Australia face-off and their 1st at the world cup. Denmark has won 2 and lost 1 of their previous 3 meetings.

Denmark’s last 5 matches have produced 3 wins and 2 draws with the last match the 1 nil win over Peru. Australia have also recorded 2 wins, a draw and 2 loses in that run with their last fixture the 2-1 defeat to France. Denmark are sweating over the availability of Christensen and Kvist whiles Australia have a fully fit squad.

Australia have been defeated by European oppositions in 7 of their last 9 fixtures against them. Both teams have similar set of players with Denmark having an edge over Australia. With this statistics backing the match, I see a difficult match being played out at the Samara arena. Nevertheless by 90 minutes Denmark should walk out as victors.

DAY EIGHT MATCHES: FRANCE VS PERU.

France play Peru at the Central Stadium in Yekaterinburg at 4pm UK time. Victory for France will confirm their qualification whiles a defeat for Peru will quash their world cup dreams. Les Blues were only able to win their last match courtesy Pogba’s late goal. Peru also played well and were only downed because of Ekiksen’s clever pass.

France and Peru have only played each other once, a friendly fixture Peru won by a goal to nil. France’s last 5 matches have produced 4 wins and a draw with the last match a 2-1 win over Australia. Peru on the other hand have generated 3 wins, a draw and a loss with the loss the recent defeat to Denmark.

The last time a South American side defeated at the world cup was in 1978. Peru are also winless in their last 5 matches against European oppositions at the world cup. The quality of players at France’s disposal coupled with the statistics should catapult France to victory come 6pm UK time.

DAY EIGHT MATCHES: ARGENTINA VS CROATIA.

Argentina and Croatia duel for 3 points in the last match of the day. The duel will take place at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium at 7pm UK time. Victory for Croatia will see them qualify to the next round of the competition whiles a loss for Argentina will see them in a precarious position. This match will see Argentina face Croatia for the 5th time. Of the 4 previous meetings, Argentina have won 2, drawn 1 and lost the other.

Argentina have recorded just a win in their last 5 matches with 2 of them cancelled and 1 each resulting in a win and a draw. Croatia though have produced 3 wins and 2 loses in that run the latest match being the 2 nil win over Nigeria. Croatia have been defeated in their previous 4 meetings against South American sides at the world cup.

The Croatian team will be without Kalinic for their match against Argentina as he was sent home because of injury concerns. The statistics do not bode well for Croatia but they are a well-organized unit so I expect them to do better than the records say. A draw or win for Croatia is what I am going for but it wouldn’t be an easy match for both sides.
