Day 28 of the ongoing Mundial in Russia have arrived and there are just 4 more days to end the competition. Today witnesses the end of the semi-finals of the tournament. The 2nd semi-final match will be analyzed and discussed in this post. But before I proceed with that I will as always bring you the result of the previous match day.

Yesterday saw France and Belgium face of in the 1st semi-final. The match ended 1 nil in favor of France after Samuel Umtiti scored the solitary goal of the match. That result saw France secure a place in the final where they will be waiting on today’s match to discover their opponents.

Today’s match day 28 fixture is the 2nd and last match of the semi-finals. It sees Croatia pitted against England. Croatia haven’t been to the finals of the world cup before while England haven’t done so in over 50 years. This should make for an interesting and extra competitive match. Both teams go into the match knowing a place in the final is in sight.

Croatia take on England in the match day 28 fixture, the 2nd semi-final of the world cup. This match is the 2nd all European affair in the semi-finals of this year’s world cup. The two teams will be battling for the last place in the finals, a chance to play France for the trophy in Moscow. Croatia and England are meeting in this semi-final match because they were victorious in their quarter finals match.

Croatia and England face each other in today’s day 28 fixture at the Luzhniki Stadium at 7pm UK time tonight. Both teams are surprise candidates to reach the finals, more so for England than it is for Croatia. The two European nations have faced each other before, with this meeting their 8th occasion. England have been victorious in 4 of the past 7 meetings drawing 1 and losing 2. Both teams haven’t faced-off at the world cup before with their only competitive match being the Group stage match at Euro 2004.

Croatia have won all their last five matches going into this day 28 match. Their latest result is their penalty shootouts victory over Russia a few days ago. England on the other hand have recorded 4 wins and a loss in their past 5 matches. The 2 nil win over Sweden a few days ago is their latest result. The two teams go into the match full of confidence and dreams haven’t made it to this stage of the competition.

England are competing in their 3rd world cup semi-finals ever. Excluding penalty shootouts they have not suffered defeats in the previous two. Croatia are participating in their 2nd world cup semi-finals tonight. They lost the 1st one to France in the 1998 world cup. Croatia have won their 2 penalty shootouts at this world cup while England finally broke their penalty shootout jinx at this world cup. Croatia have been defeated in just one of their 6 world cup semi-final appearance. England have lost quite a lot of world cup knockout matches, the recent one being the 2010 round 16 defeat to Germany.

Both teams have performed well beyond expectations and go into the match in quite some good form. There are distinctions between the two teams. While Croatia possesses experienced players like Luka Modric, Mario Mandzukic, Ivan Perisic and Rakitics the England team possesses young and somewhat experienced players like Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson and Kyle Walker.

England have a slight edge over Croatia in today’s day 28 fixture having won most of the matches they contested. The experience and statistics of Croatia should however negate that. That should then even the playing field. Having gone through two successive extra time in the space of 7 days I expect Croatia to tire out in the match eventually and that should swing results in England’s favor. It should be a close match but I see England winning this one to make just their 2nd world cup final.
