Today is day 27 of the 2018 FIFA world cup in Russia. 26 days have passed since the opening ceremony that ushered in the 2018 FIFA world cup in Russia. The Group stages have been negotiated successfully, followed by the round of 16 and more recently the quarter finals. Today is also the day the semi-finals kick-off.

4 teams made it to the semi-finals, namely France, Belgium, Croatia and England. The 1st semi-final match which will be played today sees France face-off against Belgium. The two teams are in high spirits following their qualification into the semi-finals. They go into the match knowing that a win will see them through to the finals and possibly make history.

Day 27 kick starts the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA world cup. The day has only one match in store for us and that is the match between France and Belgium. The match is an all European affair which sees the two teams’ battle for a place in the finals in Moscow. France and Belgium face each other having dispatched of Uruguay and Brazil.

The match between the two sides will take place at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg at 7pm UK time. That is 6pm in Ghana since London is one hour ahead of Accra. Both teams were favorites to reach the finals prior to the start of the tournament. France and Belgium have faced off more times than you can imagine. They have met 73 times in their history. Belgium have claimed 30 victories from the 73 matches compared to France’s 24 with 19 resulting in a draw. France and Belgium have met twice at the world cup with France winning both encounters.

Going into this day 27 match France have recorded 4 wins and a draw in their last 5 matches. Their most recent result is the 2 nil win over Uruguay a few days ago. Belgium on the other hand have produced 5 wins in their past 5 matches. Their latest result is the 2-1 victory over Brazil in the quarter finals of the world cup. Both teams go into today’s match in good form and brimming with a lot of confidence.

France have been defeated just once in their last 13 knockout matches at the world cup when shootouts are excluded. This match will be France’s 6th world cup semi-final appearance. Belgium are making just their 2nd world cup semi-final appearance. Their 1st was in the 1986 world cup where they suffered defeat to Argentina. Belgium are again undefeated in their past 24 matches winning 19 and drawing 5.

Both teams have excellent recent form or go into the day 27 match in great form. They again boast quality sides. Whiles France have Mbappe, Griezman, Pogba and Kante, Belgium also have Hazard, De Bruyne, Mertens and Lukaku. There is hardly any difference in their quality. The noticeable difference between the two sides is the statistics between them.

Belgium have a slight edge over France having won more matches against them. But when the two sides meet, that edge will not come into play. It will be an even match and highly competitive match. The quality of the managers might come into play and when that happens I expect Belgium to be victorious. I don’t expect the match to go to shootouts but that is a possibility.
