The ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia entered day 24 today. As such we have only a week left to close the curtains on the Mundial in Russia. Today marks the completion of the quarter finals stage of the tournament. Two remaining quarter final matches are on show today. We will preview those matches but before we do that let’s recap yesterday’s matches.

Yesterday witnessed the defeat of two big teams. They were all from South America. They are Uruguay and Brazil. Uruguay was the 1st to exit the tournament when they were defeated 2 nil by France in a cagey encounter. Brazil also went home after Belgium defeated them by 2 goals to 1. It was a breathtaking and scintillating match of football one in which Brazil will feel hard done considering the numerous chances they created.

Two matches are on show today and 2 more teams go home today. The matches on show are the last matches of the quarter finals. The 1st of the two matches is the meeting between Sweden and England. The last match of day 24 will see Russia face off with Croatia. The two matches will determine which teams progresses to the semi-final of Russia 2018. They will follow the same time as yesterday’s matches.

Sweden takes on England in the 1st match of the day 24 fixtures. The match is an all European affair. Both teams will be battling to secure a place in the semi-final of the 2018 world cup in Russia. Sweden faces off with England because they defeated Switzerland in their last match. England also makes an appearance in this fixture because they were the winners in their match against Colombia.

The match between Sweden and England takes place at the Samara arena at 3pm UK time. Today’s match will be the 25th meeting between the two sides. They are both evenly matched. England have recorded 8 wins to Sweden’s 7. Nine of the past 24 matches have ended in a draw. Both teams have met in the group stage of the world cup twice but both matches ended in a draw.

Sweden have recorded 3 wins, a draw and a loss in their last 5 matches going into this match. Their latest result is a 1 nil win over Switzerland in the quarter finals of the tournament. England have also produced 4 wins and 1 loss in that same run, the penalty shootouts win over Colombia being their latest result.

Sweden are participating in just their 5th quarter finals. They have progressed in 3 of the past 4 occasions failing to do in 1934 when they faced Germany. England are making an appearance at the quarter finals for the 1st time since 2006. England have progressed from the quarter finals of the world cup in just two of their 8 attempts with the last success coming in 1990. The statistics favor Sweden more than it does England, but I still see England winning this one. Their youthful but quality side should turn things in their favor.

The last match of day 24 and the quarter finals sees host nation Russia face off against Croatia. This is another all European affair and sees both teams fighting for the last spot in the semi-finals of the 2018 world cup. This two teams also meet because they defeated their opponents in the round 16th stage of the tournament.

Russia and Croatia face off at the Fisht Olympic Stadium at 7pm UK time. Both sides have faced each other in the past. This match will be their 4th meeting in all competitions. Of the past 3 meeting two of them have ended in a draw and one a victory for Croatia. They have never met in the FIFA world cup before.

Russia have produced 3 wins, a draw and a loss in their past 5 matches going into this match. Their latest result is the penalty shootouts victory over Spain in the round 16th stage of the world cup. Croatia on the other hand have recorded 5 wins from their last 5 matches. The penalty shootouts victory over Denmark is their latest result as well.

This is Russia’s 1st quarter final appearance at the world cup since 1970. The last time they were at this stage of the tournament they were known as the Soviet Union. Russia are winless in their last 7 matches against European sides excluding penalty shootouts. Croatia are appearing in just their 2nd world cup quarter final. They won their 1st appearance. Croatia have lost their 2 past matches against host nations. The statistics are not nice to both nations and they will have to seize their own chance to make their own destiny. I however foresee a Croatia win.
