Today is day 23 of the ongoing global soccer fiesta in Russia. Today begins the quarter finals stage of the world cup which last for two days. This article will name all the teams in the quarter finals of the tournament and analyze today’s matches. But before we do that lets recap the results of day, before the tournament took a break. Sweden defeated Switzerland by a goal to nil whiles England defeated Colombia courtesy of a penalty shootout.

The quarter final stage has the following matches in store for us. France and Uruguay secured their place in the quarter finals after defeating Argentina and Portugal respectively. Russia and Sweden followed suit by sending Spain and Denmark packing. Belgium and Brazil joined the party by seeing of Japan and Mexico successfully. The last two slots of the quarter finals was taken by Sweden and England after they saw of their opponents mentioned above.

Day 23 of the world cup in Russia offers two matches today of the four matches to be played in the quarter finals. The 1st match is the meeting between Uruguay and France. The 2nd match is the duel between Russia and Croatia. The two matches will follow the pattern of time we have grown accustomed to.

Day 23 of the world cup begins with the match between Uruguay and France. The match is a clash between two continents, South America and Europe. It sees Uruguay and France face off for a place in the semi-finals of the tournament. The two teams meet because they successfully saw of their last opponents.

The match between the two sides will take place at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium at 3pm UK time. This is not a new fixture to Uruguay and France. They are facing each other for the 4th time at a world cup and 9th time overall. This the 1st meeting outside the group stages at a world cup. Of those 8 meetings France have won just one, a 2 nil friendly match win in 1985.

Uruguay have won all their last 5 matches they have played. Their latest result is the 2-1 victory over Portugal in the round of 16. They go into this match on a 7 match winning streak. France on the other hand have produced 3 wins and 2 draws from that same run going into this match. Their latest result is the 4-3 win over Argentina.

The last two matches at the world cup between the two sides ended in a goalless draw. Uruguay could match an old national record by winning 5 consecutive matches at a single world cup should they win today. Uruguay will make the semi-finals for just the 5th time in their history with a win while France will do so for the 1st time since 2006. France are unbeaten in their last 9 matches against South American sides. The statistics favor both sides but I foresee a Uruguay win considering they boast the joint best defence in the tournament. It won’t be an easy match.

Brazil will take on Belgium in the 2nd and last match of match day 23. The match is a South American-European encounter or affair. The two teams will be fighting for a place in the semi-finals of the tournament come tonight. Brazil and Belgium are meeting in this match because they defeated Mexico and Japan respectively.

The match between the two sides kick off at the Kazan arena at 7pm UK time. Brazil and Belgium have met in the past before. This will in fact be the 5th meeting between them. Of those 4 meetings Brazil have won 3 of them and lost just one. They have also met at the world cup once, a 2002 round of 16 match Brazil won by 2 goals to nil.

Brazil have recorded 4 wins and a draw in their past 5 matches, their latest result being the 2 nil victory over Mexico. They have won their last 3 matches going into this fixture. Belgium have also produced 5 wins in their last 5 matches. They go into this match full of confidence having won their last match 3-2 after going 2 goals down after half time.

Belgium have been defeated in 3 of their last 4 world cup matches against South American sides. Brazil are partaking in their 7th successive quarter finals, a spanning 24 years. They have progressed to the semis in 5 of the 7 occasions. Brazil are unbeaten in their last 15 matches in all competition. Belgium have also not tasted defeat in their last 23 matches in all competition. This should make for a cagey and extra competitive match. I however see Brazil progressing to the next stage of the tournament at Belgium’s expense.
